TED TODD'S STORY

Starting small in a back garden, they began to learn about making and reclaiming wood floors by taking wood from Victorian industrial buildings and crafting it into floors. Nearly three decades later, they are still driven by a passion for wood and its inherent beauty and they are still an independent British manufacturer, still loving that so many of their customers appreciate the same things in their floors that they do.

  • WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

Ted Todd's heritage dates back over 25 years when they first started reclaiming and restoring wood floors from their small base in the centre of Warrington. The journey started in 1993 after the CEO Robert Walsh, then a 21-year-old graduate, spent a summer restoring reclaimed pine floorboards in his parent’s back garden, and received his first order for 40 square yards for a barn conversion. In 1995 – from unearthing flooring treasures from Victorian Industrial buildings and selling them fully restored they started experimenting with making wide plank solid wood floors using new European Oak. This was an industry first, as narrow maple strip floors were standard at the time.

  • HOW THEY EVOLVED

They started making new wood floors in 1997, drawing on what they had learnt from reclaiming 18th and 19th-century wood floors. These being mostly solid, wide and long Oak floorboards which quickly proved popular with their customers. As a business, they pioneered new textures, finishes and designs that would transform all our customers’ projects across the UK. They still incorporate many of the materials and ideas used in their early floors in the floors they make today. As Ted Todd went national they started to develop their network of retail partners, ensuring customers could get help with selection and fitting from a local flooring expert. As their workshops grew, their ethos remained the same – to create great-looking wood floors without compromising on sustainability. They were determined to ensure these were as sustainably sourced as their reclaimed floors and they then became FSC® certified, long before others saw this as a priority.

  • AS WE GREW

In 2005, the team took a leap of faith and moved into a manufacturing and distribution centre in Cheshire, which they still call home today. This was shortly followed by the opening of their very first Design Centre, for customers to see all their floors on display.

Considering every detail

IT’S WHAT’S INSIDE THAT COUNTS - Tedd Todd know that well-made floors using high quality, environmentally friendly timber are some of the best flooring choices around. A lot of claims are made justifying the use of single-use man-made options, but the reality is that wood floors like theirs are much healthier for indoor environments than plastic-based alternatives. That’s because unlike man-made options, Ted Todd wood floors are VOC and SVOC free.

RECLAIMED SUSTAINABILITY

Making the most of what they have.

Reclamation is a principle incredibly dear to them at Woodworks by Ted Todd.

Not only is it where they began and blossomed their woodworking skills, it represents our sustainability mindset.

Reclaimed wood flooring and wall cladding reduce environmental impact through re-use.

The wood is taken from the reclamation site, be it a historical building, workshop or colonial home, before being transformed into a reclaimed floor at their Cheshire workshops.

Every piece is slightly different from one another, but the same sustainable principles apply to each.
